E20 Mikaela von Ottolo

Where medicine, leadership and music come together

Mikaela’s journey in the medical field is defined by hands-on dedication. Over the last four years, she has been a vital part of Holm Pathology in Cape Town. Beginning as a holiday Medical Laboratory Student Intern in 2022, her technical expertise and strong work ethic led to her transitioning into a Full-Time Pathology Intern role in late 2024.

During her tenure, Mikaela has worked directly alongside pathologists and medical technologists. Her experience is deeply practical, involving Specimen Preparation & Analysis and Clinical Scribing & Theatre Work where she directly scribed for doctors and assisted with high-pressure frozen section biopsies in the operating theatre.

Mikaela’s academic years were accompanied by a stellar leadership track record at Stellenbosch University. Most notably, she served as the Primaria (Head Student Leader) of the Sonop Ladies Residence for the 2023/24 term. In this role, she provided strategic advisory support and steered team leadership initiatives for the residence. Her contribution to student life also included active service on the Embrace Committee (fostering creativity and innovation) and the Seniors’ Committee (focusing on communication and group dynamics), proving her commitment to building supportive and vibrant student communities.

Beyond the lab and the lecture hall, Mikaela’s talents extend into the arts and music. She shows immense dedication to classical music and has performed as a double bassist in the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra since January 2018.
